What Differentiates Those That Reach Their Goals vs. Those That Don't?

What differentiates those that reach their goals vs. those that don't

Over the last 9+ years of working with clients, I have noticed a few things that make the difference between a client being wildly successful vs. making just a bit of progress. As you consider your own health goals, keep these in mind.

THEY WANT IT. A LOT. They want it more than they want the security blanket of the status quo or sticking with easy habits. Overall, people who succeed in changing their lives aren’t smarter or luckier than the rest of us. They don’t have easier or simpler lives. They still have kids and pets and busy schedules, and demanding bosses. They have fears, and complex relationships, and bills to pay, and hang-ups from childhood. But making the change they want doesn’t slot into their To-Do list somewhere between organizing photo albums and cleaning out the garage. It’s at the top. Yes, the top. Above a whole host of errands and should-dos and have-to-dos. They put themselves first. They stop waiting for time to focus on their goals; they make the time.

THEY DON'T EXPECT IT TO BE EASY. For most people, change is hard. Wanting it is easy. Talking about it is easy. Doing it is not. You have to be willing to keep going on the hard days. Those who succeed are not derailed by struggle. They don’t focus on the hard days, the slip-ups, or the missed opportunities. They see these as learning opportunities. They don’t worry about how fast or how perfectly they meet their goals. They just keep trying to do better every day. They believe in their ability to make it happen.

They also bring SELF-COMPASSION into the journey and make room for challenges along the way. Babies would never learn to walk if they got overwhelmed with guilt or discouragement every time they fell down. The only real failure is not trying or giving up because the going gets rough.

So, what are your health goals? Be specific, and write them down! Then ask yourself these questions:

  • Why do you want to achieve these goals?
  • Do you want them badly enough to make them a top priority in your life?
  • What is the cost of not pursuing these goals?
  • Are you ready to put in the work?
